Description
The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 "Ed White" ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 is one of the most historically significant and technically accomplished Speedmaster references ever produced — a watch that simultaneously honours the most celebrated moment in Speedmaster history and reintroduces one of the most revered movements in Swiss watchmaking.
The reference takes its name from Edward H. White II, the NASA astronaut who wore a third-generation Speedmaster on his wrist during America's first spacewalk on 3 June 1965 — a moment that cemented the Speedmaster's place not merely in horological history but in the history of human achievement.
Every design decision on the 311.30.40.30.01.001 is a deliberate reference to that specific watch: the 39.7mm case diameter replicates the dimensions of the 1965 original; the black stepped "step dial" with its graduated surface levels is a faithful recreation of the period dial architecture; the applied vintage-style Omega logo at 12 o'clock mirrors the original's typography; and the "Dot over Ninety" bezel — named for the luminous dot positioned above the 90 on the tachymeter scale — is one of the most instantly recognisable details in Speedmaster collecting, reproduced here with painstaking fidelity.
The movement within is the centrepiece of the entire proposition: the new-generation Calibre 321, a column-wheel manual-wind chronograph with a titanium balance wheel operating at 21,600 vph and a 55-hour power reserve — the spiritual successor to the original Calibre 321 that powered the Ed White's watch in 1965, now produced using modern manufacturing methods including CNC machining and wire EDM.
The movement is fully visible through the sapphire exhibition case back, its beautifully decorated bridges and column wheel mechanism a compelling reminder that this is a watch of genuine technical substance. Presented on a stainless steel bracelet with a satin-brushed and polished finish. This is a 2023 example, presented complete with original Omega box and papers.
