Description

The Patek Philippe Calatrava Weekly Calendar ref. 5212A-001 is one of the most genuinely original and characterful watches the Geneva manufacture has produced in recent memory — a 40mm stainless steel Calatrava that introduces Patek Philippe's first-ever weekly calendar complication and does so with a dial personality unlike anything else in the current collection.

Debuted at Baselworld 2019, the 5212A marked two simultaneous firsts: the introduction of the weekly calendar as a Patek Philippe complication, and the arrival of a stainless steel Calatrava — a pairing so unexpected that it immediately distinguished the reference from anything in the brand's recent history.

The case draws its inspiration from the museum-piece ref. 2512 of 1955, reinterpreting that watch's two-tier sandwich case construction and stepped lug architecture in a 40mm steel execution of considerably more understated proportions. At 10.79mm thick, it wears with the slim, unobtrusive elegance that the Calatrava name demands. The silvery opaline dial is the watch's most celebrated and discussed feature — not for its finish, but for its typography.

The day, date, week number, and month indications are transfer-printed in a custom font developed specifically for this model, faithfully replicating the natural fluidity and imperfection of handwritten script, as though the calendar indications have been filled in by hand on a paper diary.

It is a detail of quietly disarming humanity in a watch of considerable technical complexity, and it gives the 5212A a warmth and approachability entirely at odds with the conventional Calatrava's formal reserve. Five hands are mounted centrally: faceted anthracite white gold dauphine hands for hours and minutes, a slim counterbalanced sweep seconds hand, and two distinctive hammer-shaped hands with red lacquer tips — the shorter pointing to the current day of the week on an inner scale, the longer to the current week number (numbered in compliance with the ISO 8610 standard, accounting for the occasional 53-week year) and the corresponding month on the outer scale.

A date aperture at 3 o'clock completes the calendar display. Correctors at 8 and 10 o'clock on the case band allow straightforward adjustment of the day and week indicators.

The Calibre 26-330 S C J SE — developed specifically for this reference, based on and substantially upgraded from the celebrated Calibre 324 — comprises 304 components and 50 jewels, operates at 28,800 vph, and incorporates a 92-part weekly calendar sub-mechanism driven by a seven-pointed star on the hour wheel and a 53-tooth week wheel. A Gyromax balance, Spiromax silicon hairspring, stop-seconds mechanism for precise time setting, and anti-backlash third wheel with split teeth complete a movement of exceptional engineering refinement, visible through the sapphire exhibition case back. Wound by a 21ct gold central rotor. Power reserve is 35 to 45 hours. The watch is presented on a light brown calfskin leather strap with a steel prong buckle.
